OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: What It Means for Activewear (And Why We Chose It)

When you train, your kit sits close to your skin for hours — in heat, sweat, and constant movement. Performance matters, but so does what’s behind the fabric.

At Viren, we choose materials that support your training and meet a cleaner baseline for what touches your body. That’s why all three of our ranges — Prowess, Higher Power, and Aftermath — are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified.

What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100?

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is a globally recognised testing and certification system for textiles. In simple terms: it means the certified textile components have been tested against a list of harmful substances and must meet strict limit values — especially important for products worn close to the skin.

It’s one of the clearest, most widely used standards for creating a safer-chemicals baseline in fabric.

Why this matters for activewear (and layers you live in)

Activewear is different from many other categories because it’s:

  • Worn close to skin (often for long periods)

  • Used in heat + sweat, which increases skin contact

  • Designed for high friction and movement (leggings, sports bras, fitted layers)

And if you’re anything like us, it’s not just gym wear — it’s what you’re in for school runs, travel days, dog walks, and “I’ll change later” afternoons.

OEKO-TEX is one way we help make sure what we make is not only high performance — but also aligned with a cleaner standard.

What OEKO-TEX does (and doesn’t) mean

A good certification should be easy to understand.

What it does mean

  • Fabric components are tested for a range of substances that may be harmful

  • Products must meet defined limit values to pass certification

  • The standard is especially strict for items worn next to skin

What it doesn’t mean

  • It isn’t a full sustainability score (it doesn’t measure carbon footprint)

  • It doesn’t automatically mean “organic”

  • It isn’t a guarantee that every part of a supply chain is perfect

For us, OEKO-TEX is best viewed as a high-trust baseline — a practical, third-party checked standard that supports our “Train Clean” approach.

Our fabric standards at Viren

We’re performance-first — always. But performance doesn’t need to come at the expense of peace of mind.

Across our ranges, we focus on:

  • Technical performance: compression, stretch + recovery, breathability, and durability

  • Construction you can feel: supportive waistbands, clean seams, zero fuss in motion

  • Third-party testing: OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification across Prowess, Higher Power, and Aftermath

How to shop “cleaner” activewear (without getting overwhelmed)

If you’re comparing brands, a few simple checks help:

  1. Look for third-party standards (not just marketing claims)

  2. Check transparency: fabric composition, construction details, care guidance

  3. Prioritise longevity: the most sustainable piece is the one you’ll wear for years

  4. Choose comfort + function: if it doesn’t perform, it won’t stay in your rotation

The bottom line

We built Viren for women who train — strength days, reformer sessions, and everything in between. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification across our ranges is one of the ways we back up what we believe: performance you can trust, with a cleaner baseline built in.
